Leicester Dynamite to re-launch Leicestershire Women’s Basketball League

Leicester's largest junior basketball club is inviting women across Leicester and Leicestershire to get involved.

Led by Leicester Dynamite’s Head Coach Dave Harris and Great Britain Women's Over-55s Masters basketball player Hazel Shaw, the sessions will help bring together enough players to form teams and get the league back up and running. League fixtures are also planned to take place at Moat Community College.

Dave has received a grant from Sports England to help support the formation of the new league.

Running from 6pm to 9pm, the monthly Wednesday sessions from November 11 at Moat, will welcome women of all experience levels, including former competitive players, those returning after a break and newcomers interested in getting involved in basketball.

The aim is to build a community of players who can train together, develop their skills and help shape the re-launched league.

Dave Harris said: “We know there are women across Leicestershire who want to play basketball, whether that is competitively or simply as part of a regular team environment.

“Our aim is to create a route for women to get back on court, meet other players and enjoy the game. If we can build enough teams, we can bring back a dedicated women’s league for the county.”

Hazel Shaw added: “In basketball the game never stops and that's exactly what we want to celebrate. It's been fantastic to see women of different ages, abilities and backgrounds come together at our Come and Play sessions. Everyone has embraced the opportunity to get back on court, have fun and enjoy being part of a basketball community.

"The return of the Leicester Women's Basketball League has been a long time coming and there's a real sense of excitment about getting the league up and running again in January,”

Players can register their interest individually, while existing teams, coaches and volunteers are also encouraged to get in touch to support the relaunch.
